As a freelance editor, I offer my clients a thorough evaluation of manuscripts and other written materials. I examine the material for misspellings, incorrect grammar and awkward phrasing. For your reader to have faith in what you have written, it is extremely important that the facts are accurate. That’s why I consider fact-checking an integral part of the editing process. I’m an inquisitive reader, so I ask a lot of questions of the author helping expand areas of the manuscript that would benefit from further explanation or a more in-depth examination. The types of manuscripts I have edited include: nonfiction book manuscripts, magazine articles, ad copy, employee handbooks, and programs for special events.
Here are some comments from a few of my previous clients:
“Martha Humphries’ knows writing and she knows writers. Her experience and expertise were invaluable to me during the writing of my first book. With editorial skill and personal encouragement, she kept me on track as I worked to turn my individual experience with care-giving into a narrative that is at once uplifting and educational. I found her intuitive and easy to work with. In short, in terms of both the author and the material, Martha ‘gets it.’ “

“Martha work freelance for me for several years while I was Communications Director at Jesuit College Preporatory School. She consistently researched and wrote excellent cover stories for our quarterly alumni magazine. She also helped with press releases and proofreading. Not only is Martha an extremely proficient writer and editor, but she is a joy to work with as well. I could always count on her to meet deadlines for me.”
Nancy Brown, former Communications Director/Jesuit College Preparatory School
“I asked Martha Humphries to read the first draft of my memoir, The Poopsie Chronicles. I specifically asked for constructive criticism that would make it a more readable manuscript. Martha was very thorough in her examination of details, the logical flow of the manuscript as well as the wording. She was also very careful to preserve my voice throughout. I would recommend her editorial services to anyone looking for an enthusiastic and talented opinion.”
